IFoU 2025 Lisbon: The Future of Living

ATLAS of the Lisbon Intermittent Practices: case studies, classification and the Intermittent Circuit (Lisbon, Portugal)

On 4 July 2025, Chloé Darmon (CiAUD.UBI), as part of the Intermittent City project team, presented at the International Forum on Urbanism, IFoU25 Lisbon: Future Living organized by the Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa, that took place in the Portugal Pavilion (Parque das Nações, Lisbon).

In the presentation entitled “ATLAS of the Lisbon Intermittent Practices: case studies, classification and the Intermittent Circuit”, she presented (i) the theoretical framework in which the project fits and its different phases, (ii) the case studies worked on and deepened since her integration in the project and (iii) an interpretation of the ATLAS of Lisbon intermittent practices.

At the end, there was a conversation with the other researchers from the parallel session, and we were able to talk in more detail about the analysis of the case studies, their representation in diagrams, and about particular case studies, such as Fruta Feia. We discussed how our project to observe and map intermittent practices in the city of Lisbon, most of which have emerged in the last 20 years, how these case studies can inform the implementation of public policies at the metropolitan scale, as they are mostly informal and citizen-led initiatives.

The parallel session “Dwelling…” was moderated by Liljana Cavic (FA-ULisboa) and featured two other presentations: “Rethinking Housing: Exploring Innovative Models for Future Urban Living” by researchers Ana Moreira (CITUA) and Hugo Farias (CIAUD), and “Envisioning Future Rural Community Living: A Climate-Responsive Aging-in-Place Model in Yunlin, Taiwan” by researchers Shenglin Chang (Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, National Taiwan University), Yipei Hsu (School of Architecture, Feng Chai University) and Szu-hung FANG (Stanley Wang D-School@NTU).
