The arraial is a temporary open-air popular festival, usually with music, food and drink, which often takes place in the summer in various Lisbon neighbourhoods – it is an integral part of Portuguese culture. These festivities occupy public spaces such as the streets and squares, and are often organised spontaneously by citizens. Each neighbourhood or parish has its own arraial – and they fill the city during the popular saints’ season in the summer.

Arraiais in schools are a specific type of arraial, which take up this temporary and intermittent practice within the school grounds, often at the end of the school year, where parents, children, teachers and school staff come together to celebrate and share in a moment of leisure.
