Re-use of a Quarry for a New Life
Workshop with Architecture Students (Pinhel, Guarda, Portugal)
The IC Project is now in its 3rd phase – Light Up – Future Scenarios and Forward-looking Tools (a design-oriented prospect in which future scenarios of urban transformation, resulting from IP, are proposed, tested, and incorporated in the creation of urban design tools). One of the activities to be developed is a workshop next May with architecture students from various universities, under the theme “Re-use of a Quarry for a New Life. Innovative approaches to repurposing disused quarries”.
This workshop corresponds to an in-situ exercise and will be (was) held in one of the many quarries of Pinhel, a municipality belonging to the Guarda district in northern Portugal. The participants will make an analysis of a closed quarry, questioning what and how, this peculiar space can have new lives and uses. Thus, intermittent practices will be used as a pedagogical tool to question the way this type of spaces can have more diverse and enjoyable use, while the extraction activities are still functioning. From the discussion, based on different ideas, having in common an attempt to apply innovative approaches, should result some guidelines about re-use of closed quarries for a new life.
The activity will be held as part of the Second International Symposium “New Construction with Stones” Participation is free but limited to the number of available spots (20).
Registration is mandatory, at this link
